About this role
BMS PROJECT ENGINEER Buckinghamshire
Berkshire | Hertfordshire | North West London
Large-Scale Projects Across London
Up to £70,000 DOE + Company Car or £6,825 Car Allowance + Bonus + Benefits
This is an opportunity for an experienced BMS Project Engineer to work on large-scale London projects where the controls engineering requires considerably more than standard project delivery. You’ll be involved in the detailed engineering that sits behind these projects, developing control strategies and technical documentation, producing IO information, contributing to panel design and equipment selection, resolving technical queries and supporting the project through commissioning and handover. The breadth of the position means substantial BMS experience is important. In return, it offers the opportunity to develop your capability on larger and more technically demanding projects, with exposure to significantly more of the engineering process. The package is up to £70,000 depending on experience, plus a company car or £6,825 car allowance, performance-related bonus and wider benefits.
WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY BE DOING AND WHY IT MATTERS Your focus will be the detailed design and project engineering required to deliver major BMS projects across London. You’ll translate project requirements into the engineering information needed by the people designing panels, installing controls, writing software and eventually commissioning the system. That includes producing Descriptions of Operation and equipment schedules, developing IO wiring information and reviewing designs returned by the panel shop. You’ll prepare and manage RFIs and technical submittals, resolve design and engineering queries and contribute to controls procurement, including equipment selection and control valve sizing. The responsibility doesn’t finish when the design information is issued. You’ll remain involved with the project team and subcontractors as the installation develops, providing technical support and helping resolve issues before and during commissioning. Your involvement continues through commissioning, witnessing, as-commissioned documentation, demonstration and final handover.
WHY THIS ROLE COULD BE BETTER
The scale of the projects creates the opportunity to deal with a greater level of engineering detail.
You’ll have involvement across:
• Detailed controls design, including strategy, IO, equipment schedules and panel design
• Technical coordination, including RFIs, submittals, procurement and engineering queries
• Delivery, including commissioning, witnessing, documentation and handover That continuity is important. You are not designing something and losing sight of it when it reaches site. You can see how the engineering develops through installation and commissioning, understand where issues arise and carry that practical experience back into future design decisions. It is a strong opportunity for someone who wants to become more capable across the complete engineering of substantial BMS projects, rather than specialising in only one stage of delivery.
ESSENTIALS This is a broad BMS Project Engineer position and requires substantial industry experience. You’ll need a strong technical background in BMS project engineering, commissioning or project delivery, with experience of at least one of Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens or ALC. You’ll also need Niagara knowledge, a strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical competence and the ability to interpret and modify BMS control strategies. Crucially, you need sufficient practical experience to understand how detailed engineering decisions affect installation, commissioning and the eventual operation of the system. You’ll also be dealing with clients, subcontractors and other members of the project team, so clear technical communication and accurate documentation are important.
THE CHALLENGES The attraction of major projects is also what makes them demanding. There is more engineering information to coordinate, more interaction between design and delivery, and greater consequence when details aren’t resolved early enough. You’ll need to be thorough with control strategies, IO, equipment schedules, panel information, technical submissions and commissioning documentation while keeping sight of how those individual elements fit together. Projects are located across London, with site attendance forming part of the role. The geography could therefore work particularly well for someone based in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire or North West London.
YOUR DEVELOPMENT The development opportunity here comes from the scale, complexity and breadth of the engineering exposure. If you already have a strong practical background in BMS, you’ll have the opportunity to apply that knowledge to larger projects and develop further capability in detailed controls engineering. That includes greater exposure to control strategy development, IO engineering, panel design, equipment selection, technical submissions and the coordination required to turn a detailed BMS design into a commissioned system. Just as importantly, you’ll retain visibility of the result. Following projects through commissioning, witnessing and handover allows you to see how design decisions translate into the installed system and develop your engineering judgement from one project to the next. You may also provide technical support to other engineers and supervise junior engineers as required. Relevant training courses are available where required, alongside commercial-awareness training where needed.
PACKAGE ON OFFER Up to £70,000 basic salary, dependent on experience Company car or £6,825 annual car allowance Company performance-related bonus scheme 7.5% pension, increasing to 8.75% after five years’ service and 10% after ten years 25 days’ annual leave, increasing to 26 days after two years and 27 days after eight years Plus:
• Private healthcare
• Opportunity to buy or sell additional holiday
• Competitive sick pay
• Cycle to Work scheme up to £2,000
• EV salary sacrifice scheme
• Interest-free EV charger loan up to £1,000
• Interest-free Smart Tech scheme up to £2,000
• Employee retail, leisure and travel discounts
APPLY TODAY
For an experienced BMS Project Engineer, the reason to consider this opportunity is straightforward: larger projects, deeper engineering involvement and the chance to develop your experience across considerably more of the controls design and delivery process. If you’re based around Bucks, Berks, Herts or North West London and want to discuss the scale of the projects, technical remit and package in more detail, get in touch for a confidential conversation.
