About this role

Our client is a global leader in automated material handling, warehouse automation, and intralogistics solutions, delivering complex turnkey systems for some of the world's most recognised retail, e-commerce, and industrial brands. With a strong focus on innovation, operational excellence, and long-term customer partnerships, we design, deliver, and support highly automated distribution centres and warehouse environments across international markets.

As part of their continued investment in retrofit and modernisation projects, we are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support the successful delivery of automation upgrades and control system enhancements across a diverse customer base.

The Role

The Commissioning Engineer will play a critical role in bringing automated systems into operation, ensuring that control systems, software, drives, and associated equipment perform in accordance with design specifications and customer requirements. Working closely with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, and customers, you will be responsible for commissioning activities throughout the project lifecycle, from installation and testing through to final handover and go-live support.

This position requires a hands-on engineering professional who is comfortable working in live operational environments, diagnosing technical issues, validating system performance, and implementing solutions to ensure successful project outcomes.

Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate must be willing to undertake 100% travel throughout the UK and Europe, supporting commissioning activities on customer sites and providing on-site technical expertise during critical project phases.

Key Responsibilities

You will undertake commissioning activities for automation and material handling systems, carrying out factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and performance validation of PLC, HMI, drive, and networked control systems. You will be responsible for identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and within agreed timescales.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will support software modifications, equipment integration, system optimisation, and customer acceptance processes. The role also involves producing commissioning documentation, maintaining accurate project records, and providing technical support during operational ramp-up periods.

In addition, you will act as a key customer-facing representative during project execution, building strong relationships with stakeholders and ensuring a smooth transition from project delivery to operational ownership.

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will possess proven experience commissioning industrial automation systems within manufacturing, logistics, warehouse automation, or material handling environments. Strong knowledge of PLC-based control systems is essential, with Siemens S7 and TIA Portal experience highly desirable.

You will have a solid understanding of industrial communication networks, variable speed drives, electrical control systems, and fault-finding methodologies. The ability to interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and functional specifications is crucial, alongside a practical and methodical approach to problem solving.

Given the customer-facing nature of the position, excellent communication skills and a professional approach are equally important. You will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider project team, often in time-critical and operationally sensitive environments.
