Overview:

First Military Recruitment is working in partnership with our reputable client who is seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join their growing engineering team on a full-time, permanent basis.

The role will involve working closely with electronics and controls, software and field commissioning teams to develop practical, reliable mechanical systems capable of operating in demanding outdoor environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the mechanical design of key harvesting equipment subsystems, including harvesting heads, cutting mechanisms, gripping and transfer equipment, structural frames and mounting systems.
• Take responsibility for assigned designs from concept through detailed design, prototyping, verification, field testing and release for manufacture.
• Produce and maintain engineering design documentation, drawings and change logs.
• Apply design-for-manufacture, design-for-service and design-for-cost principles as the business transitions from prototypes to commercial production.
• Develop mechanical solutions that integrate effectively with electrical, controls and software systems.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve design and integration challenges.
• Participate in regular design reviews, presenting proposals, receiving feedback and refining designs.
• Attend field commissioning campaigns to diagnose mechanical issues and translate field experience into design improvements.
• Support supplier engagement for mechanical fabrication, machining and assembly.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with manufacturing and assembly partners.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and the development of reliable, production-ready equipment.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
• Strong proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or equivalent.
• Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack-up and engineering drawing-pack release.
• Experience applying design-for-manufacture principles across fabrication, machining and mixed-material assembly.
• Demonstrable experience taking mechanical designs from CAD through to physical build and testing.
• Ability to develop practical engineering solutions for complex mechanical systems.
• Comfortable working within a multidisciplinary team where mechanical design decisions must account for electrical, controls and software requirements.
• Full clean UK driving licence and willingness to undertake field work across Scotland and wider UK growing regions.
