We're working with a leading UK infrastructure contractor seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support its highways maintenance operations across Cambridgeshire.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Health & Safety professional who enjoys working closely with operational teams, providing practical advice and helping to maintain high standards of safety across a range of highways maintenance activities.

The role offers considerable flexibility, with the opportunity to be based at any one of five maintenance depots across Cambridgeshire, alongside flexible working arrangements and regular travel to operational sites throughout the county.

Rather than being tied to a single office, you'll have the opportunity to work directly with site teams, operational managers and contractors, providing hands-on support and helping to promote a positive, proactive safety culture.

The Role Working alongside Senior Health & Safety Advisors, operational management and the wider Health & Safety team, you'll provide advice, guidance and practical support to ensure highways maintenance activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with relevant legislation and company procedures.

You'll play an important role in identifying and managing risks, supporting incident investigations, conducting site inspections and helping operational teams continually improve their approach to health and safety.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing practical Health & Safety advice and support to operational teams across highways maintenance activities

  • Undertaking regular site inspections, audits and safety monitoring visits

  • Supporting the identification, assessment and management of operational risks

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant Health & Safety legislation, regulations and safe systems of work

  • Assisting with incident investigations, root cause analysis and the implementation of corrective actions

  • Working closely with site teams, supervisors and contractors to promote safe working practices

  • Delivering safety briefings, coaching and guidance to improve awareness and engagement

  • Monitoring Health & Safety performance, identifying trends and recommending improvements

  • Maintaining accurate records, reports and compliance documentation

  • Supporting Health & Safety colleagues on other infrastructure contracts across East Anglia when required

About You
  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety Advisor or SHE advisory role, ideally within highways maintenance, civil engineering, construction or infrastructure

  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate, or an equivalent qualification

  • Good working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, risk management and safe systems of work

  • Understanding of the CDM Regulations and their application to construction or infrastructure activities

  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits and supporting incident investigations

  • Confident communicator, comfortable engaging with operational teams, contractors and senior management

  • Practical, proactive approach to identifying risks and developing workable solutions

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload across multiple locations

  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office

  • Full UK driving licence

Additional qualifications or experience that would be advantageous include:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 5/6, or working towards

  • IOSH membership or progress towards professional membership

  • Experience working with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 or ISO 9001 management systems

  • Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) qualification

Why This Role? This position offers an attractive combination of flexibility, autonomy and professional development within a major UK infrastructure business.

With a choice of five maintenance depots across Cambridgeshire, flexible working arrangements and regular opportunities to visit operational sites, you'll have the freedom to organise your working week around the needs of the role rather than being permanently based in one location.

You'll also have opportunities to collaborate with Health & Safety colleagues working on other infrastructure contracts across East Anglia, broadening your exposure to different projects and operational environments.

The company is committed to supporting professional development, including further training and progression towards professional membership of IOSH.

The package includes:

  • Salary of £43,000–£46,000

  • Company car or car allowance

  • 28 days' annual leave plus bank holidays

  • Flexible office location and working arrangements

  • Private healthcare and healthcare cash plan
