About this role

Hyreus is currently recruiting an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor for an exciting opportunity based in Cumbria with a leading Tier One civil engineering contractor operating within the power and nuclear sectors.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the commercial management of major civil engineering and infrastructure projects, taking responsibility for cost control, contract administration, subcontract management and commercial performance across assigned work packages. Working closely with project management, engineering, procurement and operational teams, you will help ensure projects are delivered in line with contractual requirements, commercial objectives and programme expectations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to take on a senior commercial role within a complex infrastructure environment, contributing to the successful delivery of significant projects across the power and nuclear sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of assigned project packages from procurement through to completion and final account.

  • Manage project budgets, cost forecasts, valuations, applications for payment and monthly commercial reporting.

  • Administer contracts and ensure compliance with contractual obligations, project procedures and commercial requirements.

  • Manage subcontractor and supplier accounts, including procurement, tender analysis, payment applications, variations and final accounts.

  • Monitor project costs, commitments and expenditure, identifying commercial risks, opportunities and potential cost overruns.

  • Manage change control, variations, compensation events and contractual claims in accordance with the relevant contract conditions.

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, planners and operational teams to maintain strong commercial performance.

  • Prepare accurate cost reports, forecasts and commercial information for project leadership and senior management.

  • Lead subcontractor and supplier negotiations, ensuring commercial terms and contractual obligations are effectively managed.

  • Support procurement activities, including tender reviews, quotation analysis and the appointment of subcontractors and suppliers.

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, value engineering and improved commercial outcomes.

  • Maintain accurate commercial records, contractual correspondence and supporting documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and internal stakeholders.

  • Provide commercial guidance and support to junior Quantity Surveyors and other members of the commercial team.

  • Ensure commercial activities comply with company policies, project governance and relevant health, safety, quality and environmental requirements.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, construction or major infrastructure projects.

  • Experience working for a Tier One contractor or within a large, complex project environment would be highly desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of commercial and contractual management, including NEC contracts, valuations, variations, forecasting and final accounts.

  • Experience managing subcontractor and supplier packages across complex infrastructure projects.

  • Demonstrable experience in cost control, commercial reporting, change management and contractual administration.

  • Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to identify risks, assess opportunities and support effective financial decision-making.

  • Experience negotiating with subcontractors and suppliers and managing commercial relationships.

  • A good understanding of construction programmes, procurement processes and project delivery requirements.

  • Excellent analytical, numerical, negotiation and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities, with confidence engaging with senior project stakeholders.

  • A relevant degree or professional qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and relevant commercial or project management systems.

  • A proactive and organised approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Experience working on power, nuclear, energy or other highly regulated infrastructure projects would be advantageous.

  • Professional membership of a relevant body, such as RICS or CIOB, would be beneficial.
