We’re currently recruiting for a Functional Skills Teacher to join a supportive, learner-focused organisation working with young people who may struggle to engage or succeed in mainstream education.
This is a rewarding opportunity for a teacher who can make learning accessible, build positive relationships and help young people develop the confidence and qualifications they need to move forward.
You’ll deliver Functional Skills Maths and English from Entry Level to Level 2, adapting your teaching to suit different abilities, learning needs and individual circumstances.
You’ll play an important part in helping learners overcome barriers, improve their engagement and work towards meaningful outcomes, whether that’s employment, an apprenticeship or further education.
The role is term-time only, working 41 weeks per year, offering a school-term working pattern alongside the opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people’s lives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths and English lessons from Entry Level to Level 2.
- Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet individual learning needs, abilities and aspirations.
- Monitor progress through assessment, target setting and regular reviews, helping learners work towards their qualifications.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with learners to encourage attendance, engagement and achievement.
- Manage challenging behaviour calmly and consistently, creating a safe, structured and supportive learning environment.
- Support young people with additional learning needs, helping them develop confidence, independence and essential life skills.
- Work closely with colleagues, families and other professionals to support learner progress and wellbeing.
- Contribute to curriculum planning and development, ensuring learning remains relevant, inclusive and effective.
- Encourage learners to recognise their potential and prepare for their next steps into employment, apprenticeships or further education.
About You
We’re looking for a committed and resilient teacher who understands that every learner is different and can adapt their approach to help young people succeed.
You will have:
- A recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience planning and delivering effective teaching programmes, ideally in Functional Skills Maths and English.
- Experience working with young people who have additional learning needs, barriers to education or complex behavioural needs.
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills, with the ability to remain calm, patient and consistent in challenging situations.
- The ability to differentiate learning and engage students with varying levels of ability, confidence and motivation.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with learners, families and colleagues.
- A genuine passion for helping young people develop their skills, achieve qualifications and progress towards a positive future.
Experience in alternative provision, specialist education, vocational learning or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly relevant.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
- Meaningful impact: Help young people who may have struggled in traditional education re-engage with learning and achieve their potential.
- Varied and rewarding work: No two learners are the same, giving you the opportunity to make a real difference through personalised teaching.
- Term-time working: 41 weeks per year, offering a school-term working pattern.
- Supportive environment: Work alongside colleagues who share a commitment to inclusive education and positive learner outcomes.
If you’re a teacher who combines strong subject knowledge with patience, resilience and a genuine commitment to supporting young people, we’d love to hear from you.
