About the Role:
Can you build trust through play while providing the calm, consistent boundaries a child needs to feel secure?
Teach Now is recruiting an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant for a dedicated 1:1 role at a primary school in Harrow. Youll support an autistic Year 3 pupil with non-verbal communication needs and behaviour that can be challenging, helping them engage, communicate and develop independence.
The pupil is not currently accessing the Year 3 curriculum, so support takes place predominantly outside the mainstream classroom. Your focus will be play-based activities, structured routines and individually tailored opportunities that meet the child at their current stage of development.
Youll work closely with the SEN team, combining warmth and reassurance with clear expectations and positive behaviour support. This role suits an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Assistant or Learning Support Assistant who stays composed under pressure and recognises progress in small, meaningful steps.
Requirements:
- SEN experience supporting autistic children and managing challenging behaviour.
- Understanding of non-verbal communication needs and individual engagement strategies.
- Confidence establishing clear, consistent routines and boundaries.
- Knowledge of positive behaviour support, emotional regulation and de-escalation.
- Experience using play-based learning, sensory activities or structured engagement.
- Patience, emotional resilience and a proactive, adaptable approach.
- Availability from 2 November for a long-term placement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide consistent 1:1 support tailored to the pupils communication and developmental needs.
- Deliver play-based activities that encourage participation.
- Maintain predictable routines, clear expectations and appropriate boundaries.
- Respond calmly to challenging situations using agreed behaviour and de-escalation strategies.
- Encourage communication, social interaction and growing independence.
- Build a trusting relationship and support engagement with instructions and activities.
- Work with the SEN team to implement strategies and monitor progress.
Benefits – Our client can offer you:
- A dedicated 1:1 role with scope to build a meaningful relationship.
- A long-term placement offering continuity of support.
- Close collaboration with the schools SEN team.
- A practical focus on play, communication and individual development.
- The opportunity to help a child engage more confidently in school life.
