About this role

Central London | 6-month contract | £300-£350 per day | Outside IR35 | Hybrid/remote working | 4 days a week

An opportunity to make a real impact within a respected membership organisation.

We’re seeking an experienced, hands-on Interim Financial Controller to support a well-established membership organisation based in Central London on an initial six-month contract.

This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified finance professional who enjoys improving financial systems, strengthening reporting and bringing greater clarity and control to financial information. You’ll work closely with the Director of Finance and Resources, the Accounts Manager and colleagues across the organisation, helping to enhance the finance function and provide meaningful financial insight to budget holders and senior management.

The role offers a flexible commitment of 4 days per week, at £300-£350 per day outside IR35.

The role

You’ll take ownership of a range of finance improvement initiatives while providing practical support to the day-to-day finance operation. Key priorities include optimising Xero, improving restricted fund accounting, supporting the next organisational budgeting cycle and developing clear, timely management reporting.

Key responsibilities

  • Finance systems and Xero: Review and improve the existing Xero set-up, configure reliable bank feeds, resolve transaction discrepancies and establish effective processes for coding and reconciliations.

  • Chart of accounts and fund accounting: Redesign the chart of accounts to support accurate financial reporting, with a particular focus on distinguishing restricted and unrestricted funds and tracking fund balances and expenditure.

  • Budgeting and forecasting: Support preparation of the 2027/28 organisational budget, developing Excel templates, working with budget holders and consolidating income and expenditure assumptions.

  • Management accounts: Enhance existing management reporting to provide clear actual-versus-budget analysis, meaningful variance commentary and relevant financial information for budget holders.

  • Stakeholder engagement: Work collaboratively with non-finance colleagues to explain financial performance, resolve queries and support effective budget management.

  • Day-to-day finance support: Assist with reconciliations, month-end activities, accounting queries and other operational finance requirements as needed.

  • Process improvement and handover: Strengthen financial controls, improve reporting efficiency, document procedures and ensure the team can confidently maintain the changes after the assignment.

About you

You’ll be a technically strong, solutions-focused finance professional who can quickly understand existing processes, identify improvements and deliver practical results in a collaborative environment.

You’ll bring:

  • A recognised accountancy qualification, such as CCAB or equivalent.

  • Strong practical experience using and configuring Xero, including bank feeds, reconciliations, chart of accounts and financial reporting.

  • Experience of restricted fund accounting and developing coding structures that support accurate fund reporting.

  • A solid track record in budgeting, management accounts and working with budget holders to explain financial performance.

  • Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, financial analysis and reconciliations.

  • Strong accounting knowledge and a willingness to get involved in hands-on finance activities.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation and judgement, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

  • The communication skills to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders and translate financial information into practical insights.

Experience within a charity, community, faith-based or membership organisation would be advantageous, alongside an appreciation of the importance of restricted funding and organisational accountability.

Contract details

  • IR35 status: Outside IR35

  • Duration: Approximately six months

  • Location: Central London but totally flexible working pattern
