Part-Time Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant – Start Your Career in Education

Are you a Psychology or Sociology graduate looking to gain valuable hands-on experience supporting children with special educational needs?

Pertemps Education Network is working with a welcoming primary school seeking a compassionate, enthusiastic and dedicated Part-Time Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with additional learning needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduates considering careers in educational psychology, clinical psychology, child psychology, social work, mental health or teaching. You will gain practical experience supporting children's learning, communication, behaviour and emotional development while working alongside experienced teachers and SEN professionals.

Psychology, Sociology and related Social Science graduates are particularly encouraged to apply.

As a Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant, you will help create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where children can develop confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards learning.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with special educational needs.
  • Supporting children with autism (ASC), ADHD, speech and language difficulties and social, emotional or behavioural needs.
  • Helping pupils access the curriculum through adapted activities and individualised learning support.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, emotional regulation and social interaction.
  • Supporting communication, confidence and independence throughout the school day.
  • Building positive relationships with pupils and helping them feel safe, understood and engaged.
  • Working collaboratively with class teachers, the SENCO and other support staff.
  • Adapting your approach to meet each child's individual needs and learning style.
We are keen to hear from candidates who are passionate about understanding child development and helping children overcome barriers to learning.

You may be an ideal candidate if you have:
  • A degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Sciences, Criminology, Education or a related subject.
  • An interest in autism, child development, mental health or special educational needs.
  • Experience working with children through schools, tutoring, mentoring, youth work, volunteering or care settings.
  • A patient, empathetic and resilient approach.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn specialist SEN strategies.
Previous experience in a school or SEN setting would be advantageous, but graduates with transferable experience and the right attitude are encouraged to apply.

Why Apply?
  • Part-time flexibility: Gain valuable work experience alongside other commitments.
  • Relevant graduate experience: Build practical skills for future careers in psychology, education, social work or mental health.
  • Specialist SEN knowledge: Develop your understanding of autism, behaviour, communication and additional learning needs.
  • Professional development: Learn from experienced teachers and SEN professionals.
  • Meaningful work: Make a genuine difference to children's educational and personal development.
  • Ongoing agency support: Receive guidance from Pertemps Education Network throughout your placement.
